The pitching staff had a very rough afternoon in today’s outing vs. the Cleveland Indians. By rough, I mean they were punished giving up 19 hits, 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 homers to Cleveland hitters. Veteran Woody Williams, who got the loss, was given the start for Houston and had himself a rather weak couple of innings. Williams went 2.2 innings giving up 6 hits, 5 runs (all of which were earned), and walked 2. Houston righty Brandon Backe also had himself a very tough night on the mound going 3 innings deep allowing 7 hits, 4 runs (all of which were earned), and a homer.
Although the ‘Stros had themselves another 4 run inning, there wasn’t much more action throughout the game on the offensive side. Hunter Pence had the most impressive game going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Miguel Tejada also had a pretty good game going 1-for-3 with 1 RBI and a run scored, Erstad also had himself an RBI on the day. Other than these efforts there isn’t much more to report on positivley speaking.
Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia gave an All-Star effort, earning his win, going 3 innings strong giving up no hits, 0 runs and striking out 3. Indian left-fielder Ben Francisco also had himself a very strong afternoon going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. He was a big part of Cleveland’s early lead going up 6 – 0 before Houston put together 4 runs in the 4th and 1 more in the 5th making the score 6 – 5. Cleveland followed by putting up a 4 run inning of their own in the 6th making the score 10 – 5. They added one more in the 8th making the score 11 – 5 which was the final.
Next up: Houston will play an away game vs. the New York Yankees on Friday at 1:15. Shawn Chacon will take on Andy Pettitte of the Yankees and try to get revenge for Monday’s 7-6 Yankee win.
