Houston opened up the 1st game of a scheduled 3 game series with a 2-0 Tuesday night victory. The win ends the 5 game losing streak that the Astros have been stuck on. They now look at a 31-28 record and sit in 3rd place in the NL Central.
The Astro offense doubled the amount of hits the Pirates got by collecting 10, 2 of which were for extra bases. Miguel Tejada had one of the extra base hits when he hit his 17th double of the season. He went 1-for-5 in the game and recorded his 38th RBI of the season. Lance Berkman also hit a double getting his 22nd of the year. For the game he went 1-for-4 with a walk and 1 RBI. The RBI is his 48th of the season and his batting average now sits at .382. Kaz Matsui had the most productive game by far going 4-for-4 with 2 runs scored. The hits give him a batting average of .278 so far this season.
Wandy Rodriguez took the mound for the Astros and had a quality outing. He work 6 inning allowing 5 hits, no runs, 1 walk and 3 K’s. He earned the win for his ball club and now has a record of 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA. Doug Brocail came in for the 8th and recorded his 10th hold of the season pitching a hitless inning. Jose Valverde came to close out the game and did just that getting his 16th save of the season striking out 1 in the process.
Not a bad way to end a losing streak especially since they got solid production from everyone. Both teams will now look forward to game 2 on Wednesday night.
